Project Server 2007

    Documentation

  • Migration Guide for Office Project Server 2007 (Word doc)
  • In the traditional sense, upgrading is often thought of as an "in place" process in which the application's binaries are upgraded from a previous version to a newer version. "Upgrading" to Office Project Server 2007 from a previous version of Project Server is a data migration process, often referred to as a "side-by-side" upgrade.

In this process, Office Project Server 2007 is installed (on the same or a different computer as the previous version of Project Server) and data from the previous version of Project Server is migrated over. There is no actual upgrade of the binaries. The administrator then has the choice of running both versions concurrently or removing the older version.

  • Project Server 2007 Integration with SharePoint 2007
  • Microsoft Office Project Server 2007 integrates with the core platform and advanced components of Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007. SharePoint Server 2007 includes several server products and components that are built on the Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services (version 3) platform. Because Project Server 2007, SharePoint Server 2007, and related products are built on the common SharePoint Products and Technologies platform, developers can use a common set of development tools and techniques to integrate and extend all of the products.

  • Project Server 2007: Getting Started with a New Platform for Developers
  • A good Project Server 2007 introduction, including Project Server 2007 architecture, Project Server Interface, Project Server Events, EPM Reporting, and Project Web Access integration with Windows SharePoint Services, v3.

    Here's an excerpt:
"The Project Server Eventing service is the key to extending Project Server functionality. Developers can create event handlers and register them through Project Web Access. Each major business object (CustomFields, CubeAdmin, LookupTable, Project, Reporting, Security, TimeSheet, and so forth) includes multiple events that you can see on the Project Web Access Events page (http://ServerName/ProjectServerName/_layouts/pwa/admin/Events.aspx). Event handlers provide "hooks" for adding new functionality, customizing existing functionality, and integrating with other applications."

  • Visual Reports
  • Heather O'Cull describes the new visual reports available in Microsoft Project. She writes:

"Visual Reports is a new feature in Project Standard and Professional that allows you to report on your project’s data in Excel using PivotTables and PivotCharts, and in Visio using a new feature called PivotDiagrams (think fancy WBS charts). Using Visual Reports you can now easily create eye-catching reports that are also informative off data from your project using formats that are familiar to your target audience."

  • Migrating from Project Server 2003 to Project Server 2007
  • From the Project 12 Blog:
"Upgrade is about changing your data in place (i.e. you have Project Server 2003, run upgrade and then you have Project Server 2007) and you can't go back to Project Server 2003. Migration is about taking data from Project Server 2003, fixing things up and then saving it to Project Server 2007.

"At the end of migration, you will have Project Server 2003 and Project Server 2007. Project Server 2003 to Project Server 2007 is a MIGRATION process, not UPGRADE!"

  • The New Project Cache
  • From Dieter's ProjBlog:
"Project 12 introduces a new client-side cache and caching service. Project Pro interacts directly with the local cache for opens and saves. The caching service then handles moving the changes between the client and Project Server. Project Pro 12 never communicates directly with SQL Server.

"We think that the Project Cache (final naming is TBD) changes the rules of the game. It allows users to have a rich client user experience + the "mobility" advantages of saving to a local file system (try that with a thin client!) with the relatively light network footprint of a web application. Customers no longer need to choose between a great user experience and a low network footprint. You can have both with P12. "

  • From Steve Richards:
"All Project Server functions are exposed as a set of web services. Just like Office Client interacts with WSS, Project Professional's integration with Project Server is also completely achieved via these web services, which means other clients or server solutions can also be integrated using these web service interfaces."
