You Receive a "Microsoft Project Cannot Log You on Automatically Using Your Windows User Account" Error

SYMPTOMS:

When you try to log on to Project Server using Project Pro 2003 or Project Web Access, Microsoft Office Project 2003 or Microsoft Project 2002, the program does not start. Additionally, you receive the following error message:

"Microsoft Project cannot log you on automatically using your Windows user account. You need to change the account in your profile, or contact your Microsoft Project Server administrator to check if your Windows user account exists and is a valid account on the Microsoft Project Server. (5003)"

CAUSE:

You may see this error message if Anonymous Access is enabled for the Virtual Directory assigned to Project Server. It is important to make sure that the Internet Explorer Enhanced Security Configuration component is not enabled.

RESOLUTION:

The Web site that is assigned to the Project Server virtual directory needs to be configured to use only Integrated Windows Authentication.

Configure the Web site that contains the ProjectServer virtual directory to use only Integrated Windows authentication.

To do this, follow these steps:

  • Go to the Control Panel, select Administrative Tools, and then open Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager.
  • Expand ServerName, and then expand Web Sites.
  • Right-click the Project Server Web site, and then click Properties.
  • When the Properties dialog box appears, click the Directory Security tab.
  • Click Edit under Authentication and Access control.
  • Click the Enable anonymous access check box to clear it.

Your settings should look like this screenshot:

Integrated Windows Access

Verify that the Integrated Windows authentication check box is selected. If it is not, click to select the Integrated Windows authentication check box. Click OK.

If it is a suitable time, then you need to Restart IIS for your changes to take effect. To do this, click the Start menu button, click Run, type "iisreset" (without the quotes) in the Open box, and then click OK.
